The World Championships Dart 18 will be held in Workum (the Netherlands) from the 10th - 15th of August 2008. Workum is a small town in the for sailors very well known Friesland. This part of Holland is rich of water and culture. Friesland is bilingual, most of the inhabitants speak Dutch and most of them also speak there own language Fries. Known products are the special alcoholic drink “Beerenburg”, the cookies “Frieske Dunke” and the bread “Sukerbolle”. The people of Friesland are very fond of sailing and iceskating. They also have their own sport, it’s called “Firljeppen”, it’s something like polejumping . Workum is positioned next to the IJsselmeer, the biggest lake in the Netherlands. The village relies on water tourism and many big sailing regatta’s take place here.
As Friesland is the perfect area for leisure, extending your stay here adjacent to the Dart competition, offers you a unique holiday. Sail with your own cat or rent one of the many varieties of Dutch monohulls, like the Valk. This way you can travel around through countryside and cities by boat, lodge in small hotels or even sleep on your own boat. Or visit one of the many sailing events, either with modern monohulls or historic sailing ships.
