Dear Dartsailors,
We are very happy to inform you about the Dart18 World Championships 2009, to be held on Aruba from 20 - 28 November 2009. The new website www.dartworlds2009.com is ready and the entry-forms are available at the website. You will find all information about the event, the program and the costs at www.dartworlds2009.com .
The event will be organised at Aruba in front of the beautiful Palm Beach with excellent sailing conditions. The location will be the same where we are during 18 years organising the Aruba Heineken Regatta. We have arranged an almost all-inclusive Dart18 Worlds event with a lot of good sailing, racemanagement, boattransport from Rotterdam to Aruba, flights with Martinair from Amsterdam to Aruba, 8 nights hotel (including breakfast) , 5 lunches, 5 dinners, happy hours and parties. Of course it’s also possible for participants to organise their own flights and/or accommodation.
With enough boats from different countries it will also be possible to organise a container e.g. from Swiss, France, Germany. Of course the extra costs have to be paid by the participants who wishes to transport their boats from other locations, but mostly it’s cheaper to organise one transport instead of driving a lot of boats by car to Rotterdam. If you are interested to arrange a container from other countries, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
We hope to see a lot of Dart18 sailors next November on Aruba.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Best regards,
Edwin Lodder

The International 2009 Dart season started from May 1st till May 3rd with the 23rd edition of Eurocat. More than 300 boats gathered at the Yacht Club of Carnac to sail in the bay of Quiberon. 26 Darts from France, Belgium and the Netherlands were amongst them. The Dart class finished in total 7 races and a long distance under perfect circumstances.
On the first day the weather was splendid with sun and wind around 20 knots. Under sporty conditions 5 races were run. The second day of the regatta saw the long distance race. After a beautiful start, the Darts headed for Houat, skirting around La Vieille rock. The sailors had much pleasure in the bay with better winds then forcasted. After sailing AFIDART organised a well attended aperitif for the Dart 18 sailors. On the third and last day, 2 races were completed. The start was given two hours later than planned and finally the wind raised up to 8 knots.
The Long distance race was won by Pierre Betsch and Isabelle Monod. The Dart 18 European and World Champions Dode Emmanuel and Sarah Herbert won Eurocat 2009!
Congratulations!!

In late 2008 Laser Performance advised IDA they were intending to give up the rights to the manufacture and distribution of the Dart 18. They held the rights to the rest of the World outside South Africa. At this point the rights automatically revert to Bryher Mouldings.
Since the announcement IDA has held constructive discussions with Ian Fraser of Bryher Mouldings with regard to the future manufacture and distribution of the Dart 18. Ian has confirmed his commitment to the continuing production and distribution of the Dart 18. He has selected Windsport International in Falmouth UK, owned by Brian Phipps as his preferred distributor for the boat and one design class legal parts.
Ian and Brian have already invested in the future of the boat, purchasing spares from Laser and restocking parts that have been in short supply. This has secured the availability of one design parts for the fleet.
Ian has already visited South Africa on two occasions to look at production facilities and to discuss the quality issues that have previously been experienced. He has discussed proposals to recommence production, and most importantly instigated quality control inspection procedures which will lead to an improvement of the product from South Africa. The South African manufacturer has confirmed their commitment to these procedures.
The timescale for new boats being available has not yet been determined. It is important to move one step at a time to ensure the quality of the product is not jeopardised.
As soon as we have further information on the timescales we will advise you. We understand Brian is working on proposals for distribution of the new boats and when these are published we will let the membership know.
Ian and Brian have already made a significant investment and commitment to the future of the Dart 18 and we fully support them in their actions. This will lead to the continued availability of new boats and spares and the future prosperity of the Class.
