The organisation is proud to present the official location for the Dart 18 Worlds 2008! The worlds are to be held in Workum, a small village next to the "IJsselmeer" in Friesland (Northern Holland). The Worlds will be held in the second week of August 2008 (9-15 August). We expect to have a lot of Dart sailors at our event and the organisation is working hard to organise a spectacular event on water and on shore. The program of the worlds will be published later on.
Workum is well known by people who like watersports and the local sailing club is experienced in organizing the regatta’s of big sailing events, like the European Championschips Optimist, European Championships Europe and Dutch Youth Regatta (with up to 600 different boats). The organization will publish the Notice of Race soon. The IJsselmeer is one of the best places in the Netherlands to organize a World Championship with most of the times good wind and nice short waves, which makes sailing exciting.
Congratulations to Paul Wakelin & Emma Curtis of Fluid Boat Services who took a brand new South African built Dart 18 to Eurocat at Carnac and beat all comers to win the Dart Class both in the fleet racing and the long-distance race. In the long distance race they finished 3rd overall on corrected time to make the podium in a field of well over 250 catamarans including all the famous names of catamaran racing. Well done Paul & Emma.
The international Dart 18 classes have always been sportive and big fleets. To make sure this will still be the feeling of the Dart 18 in a couple of years, the Dutch Dart Association has tried a new concept. The goal was to attract more young people for Dart sailing and make sure they would also go racing.
So the NDKO came up with the plan in 2005 to attract students to the Dart, by lending a couple of students from the Student Sailing Association Histos a boat. In exchange, the students have to sail all the races during the year.
This year there is a fleet of 6 student boats in the Netherlands and the concept proved to be a succes.
2007 marks the centenary year of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), the world governing body for the sport of sailing. ISAF is celebrating its birthday by celebrating sailing. The year 2007 will be marked by events, both small and large, global and local, for sailors and for people new to the sport.
ISAF President Goran PETERSSON (SWE) commented, 'The ISAF Centenary provides not only a platform to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of ISAF, but offers a unique opportunity to promote the sport around the world.
ISAF is looking forward to working with the MNAs and Classes, and through them involving clubs and event organizers to share the sport and maximize the awareness of the wonderful sport of sailing. ISAF is also receiving a great contribution from sponsors and supporters around the world, to ensure 2007 will be a year with a lasting legacy' .
